DHX Media (TSX:DHX.B) a annoncé lundi avoir lancé une évaluation de ses options stratégiques, incluant la possible vente de ses activités, en entier ou en partie.


Le producteur spécialisé dans le divertissement pour enfants a dit avoir mis sur pied un comité spécial d'administrateurs indépendants pour évaluer les options qui s'offrent à lui.


Le propriétaire des émissions de télévision Teletubbies,Peanuts, Inspector Gadget, Strawberry Shortcake et Degrassi a précisé qu'aucun échéancier n'avait été établi pour prendre une décision sur son avenir.

The HX in DHX Media’s name is about to lose a lot of its meaning. The Canadian entertainment company has announced the sale of its Halifax animation studio. While DHX itself was silent on details of the transaction, The Chronicle Herald reveals the studio has been sold to Island of Misfits Media Ventures, a new local company founded by former DHX CEO Dana Landry.
First established by the Halifax Film Company in the early 2000s, the division was initially responsible for stop-motion projects like Poko and Lunar Jim, though quickly pivoted to CG-animation. The studio was one of the key pieces in the 2006 merger between Decode Entertainment and Halifax Film that formed the creation of DHX Media. In the years since, DHX Studios Halifax has helmed series such as the Inspector Gadget reboot, Space Ranger Roger, Wishenpoof! as well as having worked on Mattel properties like Little People, Bob the Builderand Fireman Sam.
DHX expects the sale to close by December 31, 2018. The Halifax studio employs 168 full-time staffers. Island of Misfits eventually plans on launching its own IPs with the team, though they will continue to work for DHX on a number of projects under contract. DHX will also keep its headquarters in Halifax, with the sale not impacting the company’s local live-action productions, which includes CBC’s This Hour Has 22-Minutes.
The move leaves the company’s animation production solely in the hands of DHX Studios Vancouver. The 75,000-square-foot facility has around 600 employees. It was opened in early 2016 as a way to consolidate Studio B Productions and Nerd Corps Entertainment into one location. The branch is responsible for DHX shows like Mega Man: Fully Charged, Polly Pocketand the upcoming Rev & Roll. DHX Studios Vancouver also handles service animation for clients like DreamWorks on The Adventures of Rocky & Bullwinkle and Hasbro’s My Little Pony.
News of the Halifax studio’s sales comes just weeks after DHX Media exited a strategic review. The company entered one last fall after mounting debt (caused by a number of corporate acquisitions) torpedoed its stock price as investors began losing confidence in DHX’s ability to pay it off. During that period, DHX sold off its mobile gaming office, as well as a significant stake in its ownership of Peanuts. The company saw a significant shake up in its management, with the company’s original CEO Michael Donovan returning to the position. The conclusion of the strategic review saw DHX suspended its dividend (the money it pays back to investors) and announce a shift in focus to producing content for streaming platforms as well as “key broadcasters.”
