It’s that time of year again. The CRTC released their financial report for Canadian broadcasting in 2019. Tracked between September 1, 2018, and August 31, 2019, total broadcasting revenue dropped 1.3% year-over-year. The total number of TV (cable/IPTV/satellite) subscribers in the country declined 2.6% from the year before. The latter marks the sharpest decline in the last five years.

YTV remained steady in 2019, posting $57 million in revenue – a decline of <1% from the year prior. A 13% increase in programming expenses impacted pre-tax profitability, however. That dropped to $10.1 million from $12 million in 2018. The channel's subscription count took a 10% hit, dropping to 6.4 million. In 2015, YTV had over 11 million subscribers.
For the second year in a row, the English and French Teletoon channels have lost money. The duo did $44.1 million in revenue, which was down 7% from the year prior. DTH subscriber revenue dipped 14% and ad-sales dropped 9%. After $48.2 million in expenses (the majority tied to programming), the channels lost $4.5 million, compared to last year's loss of $3 million. Subscriptions fell 10% to a new total of 4.6 million.
Toddler channel Treehouse reportedly continued to lose money. Revenues were at $12 million on the year, down 5% year-over-year. After adjustments and interest, Treehouse posted an $1.3 million loss on the year, compared to $817,884 in 2018. Subscribers dipped 10% to 4.9 million.
On the U.S. branded channel front, Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon remain unprofitable. The toon network generated $3.9 million revenue (down 20%) against expenses of $8.2 million, for a loss of $5.9 million after adjustments. That marks an improvement from last year's loss of $6.8 million. Cartoon Network has 2.1 million subscribers (down 19%). Nickelodeon did $4.2 million in revenue (down 4%), with total expenses at $5.5 million. After adjustments and interest, the channel reportedly lost $2.9 million in broadcast year 2019. The subscriber total for Nickelodeon is at 2.2 million (down 12%).
